  • The Establishment of the Oromo Democratic Revolutionary Party (ODRP)
 - 09/01/2024

As we enter into the new year, through establishing the political party, movement and revolutionary vanguard, the Oromo Democratic Revolutionary Party, continue our organizing efforts to pursue our commitment to the Liberation of Oromia, it’s people and lands, and continue offering our contributions in the collective struggle to liberate the entire country, region, continent and world.

After the assassination of Haacaaluu Hundeesaa, the political platform “Walaboomuu” was formed to advocate for the full realization of political autonomy of Oromia, her land and people, from the Ethiopian state. Over three years, Walaboomuu’s political work has experimented with a number of approaches and methods to achieve it’s objectives, resulting in the production of a number of campaigns and events, and the development of a breadth of relationships of comradeship across the region, continent and beyond. As we close in on the 4th year since the event that catalyzed the formation of Walaboomuu, the political assassination of Haacaaluu, and in light of the increasingly volatile conditions that societies in Oromia and across the country continue to face, we are re-organizing Walaboomuu into an ideological political party, the ODRP, with Walaboomuu continuing as part of the ODRP’s Education Commission. The other commissions of the ODRP include a Women's Commission, Organizing Commission and internationalist Commission.

We define the ODRP as an ideological party as its main objective is not to participate in the theatrical electoral or parliamentary politics of the Ethiopian state, though it may re-consider this position for tactical purposes in the future. The main objective of the ODRP is to educate and mobilize societies based on it’s political ideas and convictions, for the purpose of supporting the nations and nationalities within the Ethiopian state and beyond it to strengthen their respective struggles for political, economic and societal autonomy.

The ODRP is a People-Centered Pan-African Party. “People-Centered Pan Africanism” is an ideological framework that is part of the broader Pan-Africanism worldview, and that considers alternative perspectives to political African identity, beyond nation statist nationalism, land politics, beyond nationalization as the main strategy for the economic liberation of land from capitalist monopolies. PCPA is a political perspective that seeks to mobilize society to build a parallel political, economic and social system to the Ethiopian nation state and beyond it, based on the principles of: Women’s freedom, ecological and communal economics, grassroots, democratic political decision making. Inspired by the Kurdish freedom movement and its political leader, Ocallan’s ideas, the ODRP seeks to trial the PCPA approach as the application of democratic confederalism in Oromia, Ethiopia and the rest of the continent.

In this moment, our shared world is bearing witness to a number of genocidal war fronts waged by nation state’s and their collaborators. With every single people group fighting to liberate themselves from colonialism and settler colonialism, extractive capitalism, patriarchal violence and violent nationalism to bring forth a new world, our sincere and revolutionary salutations of solidarity are with you, from Palestine, to West Papua, Kurdistan across the African continent, into Abya Yala and beyond.

On the 1st of February, we will release our first comprehensive position paper in English and Afaan Oromo, addressing a multitude of political issues in the horn region and beyond, Including but not limited too the ongoing war in Oromia between the Ethiopian government and the Oromo Liberation Army, the war in the Amhara region, Ethiopia and Somaliland’s port deal and more. Across 2024, we intend to actualize our party's goals utilizing a variety of organizing and mobilizing tactics and strategies, and we open the invitation to any person who believes in a free and just world, to join our efforts.

  • Joint Statement: ODRP & the ALF (Agew Liberation Front) - Addressing the Attacks Faced by Agew and Oromo Communities in the Amhara Regional State of Ethiopia in February & March 2024 - 29/04/2024

  • African Movements, Activists, and Artists Stand in Solidarity with the People of Mozambique - 28/10/2024

During the week of October 13th—19th, 2024, social movements from across the African continent came together for a week of learning and solidarity, hosted by grassroots social movements working daily to improve the living conditions of Mozambique's people.

During our time there, we witnessed the beauty of the everyday people of Mozambique, reflected in their love for their land; their history of revolutionary struggle, and the compassion and resilience with which they held their communities together.

As people invested in the future of our continent, we are authoring this statement because, hand in hand with the work of the people who continue to give us hope, we witnessed the immense structural challenges the people of Mozambique face. Furthermore, we are angered to have received the news, just a day after our departure, of the killing of the two activists and electoral candidates murdered inside their vehicle by supposedly unknown individuals: Elvino Dias, the lawyer for the Presidential Candidate, Venâncio Mondlane, and Paulo Guambe, Spokesperson and National Representative of the PODEMOS party.

We also received reports of almost a dozen young people injured by tear gas canisters, rubber bullets, and live bullets fired by the police, who should above all protect unarmed citizens.

We see this action as an act of intimidation that tarnishes Mozambican democracy, which has been declining due to acts of corruption, non-transparent electoral processes, and an increasingly authoritarian government.

In one voice, as the social movements of the African Solidarity Learning Festival 2024, we express our indignation at the murders of Elvino Dias and Paulo Guambe and the state’s ongoing violence against the people it claims to serve.

Justice institutions are urged to investigate this crime expediently and hold those involved accountable. A democratic state cannot be characterized by recurring murders of those who dissent. In this same vein, we would like to call for the accountability of all agents and those who lead them, for the inhumane acts witnessed throughout the country during the demonstrations protesting both the deaths of the activists and the election results.

We also want to urge African and international institutions, the International Criminal Court, and all those who deal with the human rights of peoples, democracy, and governance to take a stand on the latest episodes in Mozambique.

During our time together this past week, we emphasized liberation as a collective task. In this spirit, we call on all people of conscience to recognize the violence suffered by the people of Mozambique as a breach against us all. We affirm that all sovereign power belongs to the people, and we wholeheartedly reject the violence of the state.

Dear people of Mozambique, you are the guarantor of the country's development and its democratic freedoms. We offer our deepest condolences for the irreparable loss of Elvino Dias and Paulo Guambe. We stand in solidarity with you. Power to the people.

  • “Beheadings In North East Oromia by Right-Wing Amhara Militia, Fanno” (ODRP)- 21/11/2024

Harrowing images of a man being slaughtered by another man circulated on social media on the earlier this week  The murdered was killed as his murderer used the Amharic term for calling upon God (Bes-ma-ham) and as the person filming the act called the slain “Galla” - a derogatory term historically used by Abyssinian society to reference the Oromo. The perpetrator is allegedly a member of the right-wing Amhara nationalist insurgency - Fanno. This took place in Salale, located in northeastern Shewa, Oromia. Sharing a video this graphic and violent is extremely difficult and in most circumstances, we would refrain from circulating this kind of footage, however, for those who need to bear witness to this reality, viewer discretion is strongly advised.

There are no words adequate enough to accurately express the sense of rage with which the Oromo Democratic Revolutionary Party condemns this heinous act. Fanno, along with any supporter of the Fanno movement, must immediately and permanently be recognized as an enemy force by all people and communities of conscience in the country of Ethiopia, the Horn of Africa region, the African continent, and the world. We must never forget that the current regime in Ethiopia, that of Abiy Ahmed, is the main reason this hateful movement has the means and mobility to do what it is doing.

We will never forget that it was Abiy Ahmed who, just a moment after coming to the helm of power, revived the sentiments and aspirations of Ethiopia’s imperial legacy, empowering an ideology that produced hate and oppression in the past and - as we see - is doing so again. Beyond only fostering an environment where the kind of violence we see in Salale has been normalized, Abiy is why Fanno has material capacity.

Fanno, the Amhara Regional State, and Eritrean forces were allies to the state during the Tigray genocide. After the signing of the Pretoria agreement - intended to end the genocide - Fanno and Abiy came face to face over land Fanno considers as rightfully that of the Amhara. This land, in the Western Tigray region, bordering the Amhara region, is considered part of Tigray under the constitution of 1994, the borders recognized by the Pretoria agreement, and the same land Abiy handed over to Fanno for their collaboration in Tigray.

So, our condemnation is in equal part against the current regime in Ethiopia, as it is against Fanno and its specialized breed of hatefulness and terror.

We can not forget that Fanno, as we have indicated in the above paragraph, is a proponent of violence against not only the Oromo but many people groups in Ethiopia. The devastation that Tigray - and in particular Tigrayan women through sexual violence - experienced over two years is just one example. The Agew people and their daily battle to become free of Amhara imperialism propagated by Fanno is another example.

To understand Fanno we must reckon with two truths: Ethiopia is Africa’s last standing colony, not the only non-colonized country on the continent. Secondly, to reach a point where we can collectively reject Fanno and its violence, which is the only naturally human thing to do - we must also- to some degree - reject what it means for Ethiopia to exist and what it means to be or not be an “Ethiopian”.

To achieve a free and liberated Africa, and to achieve the ideals of Pan-Africanism, we must be amongst those who know and understand Ethiopia as a product of colonial domination. There is, in our view, no distinction to be made between colonialism and “internal colonization” - a term used to differentiate between colonial violence enacted by those of the same racial group and the colonial violence of Europeans in the Global South.

The creators of modern-day Ethiopia plundered land, killed indigenous people, and imposed language, religion, and ideology through violence, all to accumulate wealth for an economic and political elite: is this not the character of a colony?

Ethiopia’s history is indeed long, but the development and use of The Solomonic Myth (a belief Fanno shares in) and

the consolidation of the Ethiopian state make Ethiopia a colony. The fact that the people of Ethiopia are racially black people or are African people (though Ethiopianism, and Amharaness along with it, carry deeply anti-black and anti-African sentiments within their ideas of self) does not reduce the matters of Ethiopia to tribal or territorial conflict.

Ethiopia - through support from and collaboration with European powers to colonize the Horn region - was created at the dispossession of millions of Indigenous people. This is the violence that is fuelling Fanno today - what fuels the murderer in the video.

Our call for solidarity to speak out against Fanno and the Abiy Regime is to all friends and comrades alike - though we echo a special call to those amongst the Amhara people of Ethiopia. Reclaim your identity from this monstrous force. Fanno is not a problem that can be solved from the outside alone, we must work together to develop a relationship whereby Fanno is not a popular representation of the Amhara multinational struggle. Nothing can change that for generations to come, we will be neighbors, and this violence makes nobody a victor. We call on the Amhara people to enjoin in the revival of the political left in Ethiopia and to redefine their relationship to multinationalism and political struggle entirely, committing, alongside the rest of Ethiopia’s people, to standing against Fanno,  Amhara imperialism, and the current regime in Ethiopia.

To our comrades in the region and across the continent and world - we ask for solidarity by way of understanding the special role that Ethiopia plays in imperialism on the African continent, and to recognize that resisting imperialism today is also a matter of telling the truth about Ethiopia.
